Arthur’s interiors and still lifes are where structure and color truly stand out.
Similar to his other works, Arthur Gebhardt frequently painted interiors from his homes and the homes of his family members, but more often he painted colorful imaginative interiors drawn from his own imagination and interests.
Similarly, his still life paintings range from detailed studies of real life objects, such as “Work Gloves,” to bright inventive florals with bold primary backgrounds, such as “Irises” and “Poinsettias.”

Lobster Dinner

This interior scene is a visual feast. The table is fully dressed: a lobster takes center stage and the emerald-backed chairs are positioned for guests arriving. His daughter Ellen had recently moved into a new home and asked Arthur to bring her a large painting for her new dining room. This tablescape interior was a somewhat cheeky addition to her home – a painting of a dinner in her dining room. Arthur always added his personal touch. In the window in the back, three small white figures are featured flying a kite – these are Ellen’s three children.
